Maine Huts & Trails
strives to create a safe and
enjoyable outdoor experience
for its users, but that
doesn't mean that we'll
do all the work. It is important
that you plan your trip
according to the abilities of
your group, check the weather
for the latest conditions,
visit our website for the
latest trail conditions and, most importantly, be prepared for the
unexpected. This is our recommended list of items to bring:
Note: Day-visitors
to the hut will have access to the toilet facilities, potable water
and are welcome to enjoy some time relaxing and touring the new hut.
Trail mix, a few souvenirs, soup, baked goods and hot beverages are
available for purchase at the hut.
For
the trail:
- Backpack (for an overnight, your pack should be at least 2000
cubic inches)
- wind/waterproof jacket, pants
- insulating layer (fleece, down, wool and synthetic are suggestions)
- base layer top and bottom (synthetic fabrics work best to wick
moisture away from your skin to help you stay warm and dry)
- hat (and an extra one) - for sun protection in summer and warmth
in winter.
- extra socks
- first aid kit (each group should have one or more)
- headlamp or flashlight (make sure the batteries are fresh)
- trail map
- compass (and the knowledge to use it)
- matches
- gaitors
- binoculars
- snacks (crunchy granola bars and trail mix do well in the cold.
Avoid foods that will freeze or melt)
- plenty of water (at least two quarts per person. During winter,
consider using an insulating bottle carrier to keep your water from
freezing)
- camera
- Summer specific - bug repellent, sunblock, hiking boots, mountain
bike and helmet
- Winter specific - XC skis or snowshoes and poles (rental info
here),
Ski wax (if needed), gloves or mittens
For the overnight hut guest
- A Sleeping bag is highly recommended during the winter
months. Sheets are an appropriate alternative during
the warmer months. Bunks contain a standard twin size mattress.
- Change of clothes
- Flip-flops/Slippers/down booties/crocs (for wearing around the
hut)
- Book/journal (we have some books at the hut too)
- Pillowcase
- Towel
