Trip Description 

3-Day/2-Night @ 2 Huts (Poplar Hut > Stratton Brook Hut)

Gear up for a three day, two night hut-to-hut adventure. Let a Registered Maine Guide introduce you to our backcountry trails on the way into Poplar Hut for the first night. Experience the stunning views along Crommet’s Overlook on the way to Stratton Brook Hut, where you’ll spend your second night. Delicious meals, hot showers, crackling woodstoves and friendly people await you at each hut.

 

Itinerary Outline

Day 1:
12:00 PM Meet your guide at the Airport Trailhead in Carrabassett Valley. Put your backpack in the gear box so that it can be shuttled to the hut(Shuttle leaves at 12:00 noon. Click here for more information on gear shuttles.)
12:30 - 2:00 PM Begin your ski with a nice easy section along the Narrow Gauge Trail. Merge right onto the Maine Hut Trail and begin a gentle, but steady, ascent to the Poplar Hut. Overall elevation gain of 431 feet, mostly in the last 1.8 miles of trail to Poplar. (3.2 miles total)
4:00 PM Gear shuttle arrives at the hut with your backpack
6:00 PM Dinner
 
Day 2:
7:30 AM Breakfast & gear shuttle departs with your backpack
8:30 AM Leave Poplar Hut with your guide and start the day’s ski with a fun downhill first thing. Merge right onto the Narrow Gauge Trail and enjoy a nice flat 2-mile section. Merge back onto the Maine Hut Trail and ski gradually uphill for another 3 miles, pausing to appreciate the outstanding views from Crommet’s Overlook along the way. Finally, merge onto Newton’s Revenge Trail where, true to it’s name, the last mile to the hut will be a challenging uphill climb. Overall elevation gain of 566 feet, almost entirely in the last mile of trail before Stratton Brook Hut. (7.6 miles total)
12:00 - 1:00 PM Arrive at Stratton Brook Hut. Pat yourself on the back for a ski well done with a hot cup of coffee or tea or even a glass of wine or beer by the fire. Don’t forget to check out the amazing 360° views of Sugarloaf, Crocker and the Bigelows, they are well worth the trip!
4:00 PM Gear shuttle arrives at the hut with your backpack
6:00 PM Dinner
 
Day 3:
7:30 AM Breakfast & gear shuttle departs with your backpack
10:00 AM Depart Stratton Brook Hut and let your guide lead you back along the trails to your vehicle at the Airport Trailhead. Overall elevation loss of 997 feet, much of which is in the first mile of trail from Stratton Brook. (4.8 or 6.7 miles total, depending on route taken)
12:00 PM Gear shuttle arrives at the trailhead with your backpack
12:00 - 1:30 PM Arrive at the Airport Trailhead. Don’t forget to grab your pack from the gear box before you head home!
