FLAGSTAFF LAKE HUT

Mackenzie Hogg

Born in the “Live Free or Die” state, New Hampshire, “Mack” has a perpetual need to be released into the great outdoors. From traveling across the country in her Chevy Astro van, managing a food truck on Peaks Island off the coast of Portland, to teaching snowboarding lessons this past winter at Sugarloaf Mountain, Mackenzie can always be found doing new and exciting things.

Mackenzie is excited for this new journey of living in the vast wilderness that surrounds the Western Maine Mountains. She’s most looking forward to hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and paddling out on the beautiful Flagstaff Lake this summer. Ask her about her many adventures when you meet her this summer!

Greta Byrne

Growing up, Greta split her time between her home in New Jersey and at their family camp on Sugarloaf Mountain. She feels fortunate to have had the great outdoor playground of Sugarloaf in her backyard, where Greta spent her time exploring the Nordic trails, making snowboard jumps into the woods, and speeding down the slopes of the largest ski area on the east coast.

When Greta was 14 years old she moved to Vail, CO. A year later she made the US Ski Racing team! The favorite place that she has traveled is Cambodia/Vietnam. Greta loves the state of Maine and is looking forward to further exploring the Western Maine Mountains and Lakes region that has always felt like home to her.

Erin Cunningham

While living as a student in Boston, Erin frequently escaped on the weekends northward to play and explore the mountains. Now that she’s graduated from Northeastern University, she’s excited to spend a full season in the great outdoors this summer with Maine Huts & Trails.

Erin’s looking forward to meeting new people, sharing recipes and stories, learning more about sustainable energy systems, and improving her gardening skills. On her days off, you can find Erin enjoying the various vistas along the Maine Huts Trail, either hiking or relaxing in her hammock. She expects that the best part of living full time in the Maine woods will be being dazzled nightly by star-filled skies.

Caroline Heyburn

Caroline is from Brunswick, ME. She is a rising senior at Milton Academy in Massachusetts and hopes to study international relations and learn Arabic in college. Caroline has volunteered at Flagstaff and Poplar Huts in prior summers and is excited to be with MH&T for the full summer season. She attended the Maine Coast Semester at Chewonki where she worked with the Maine chapter of the Sierra Club on improving Maine’s solar policy.

Caroline loves to be outside skiing, running, and hiking. Some of her favorite adventures have been trekking through the Yukon Territory, completing the Tour du Mont Blanc, hiking on the International Appalachian Trail in Gaspe, and completing the first 330 miles of the Appalachian Trail from Katahdin through the Presidential Mountain Range. Caroline is excited to train for her upcoming cross-country season by running on MH&T’s 80+ miles of trails and climbing New England’s 4000+ footers with her Dad, who inspired her love for the mountains.

James Kilgallon

Originally from Boston, James spent most of his youth biking in Wisconsin. The waters of the Great Lakes were his first love and he hopes to someday be able to aid in their conservation. James has spent time working for AmeriCorps NCCC in Colorado, Arkansas, New Mexico, and Arizona where he worked on flood relief, wildland fire mitigation, invasive plant control, and setting up a community farm in a food desert.

For the past 3 years, James has been able to marry his love of agriculture, good food, sustainability, and bikes by managing logistics for Metro Pedal Power, a human powered delivery company that delivers wholesale produce and CSAs to kitchens and residents of the Boston area. In his free time, you can find James riding or tinkering with his bike, cooking and baking, taking naps in his hammock, or writing to his pen pals. James has spent the last five years living in the city and is very excited to get back out into the woods and to see the stars again.

Annie Cooke

Annie is from Cornville, Maine and is a recent graduate of Skowhegan Area High School. She was a three sport athlete and has always had a love for everything outdoors. Annie grew up spending a lot of time hiking and camping with her Dad. Her Dad would even let her skip school occasionally in the winter and the two of them would venture out into the Maine wilderness, hike up a mountain, and spend the night camping at the summit. Annie also enjoys both Nordic and downhill skiing, biking, whitewater rafting, and pretty much any other outdoor related activity.

When Annie was in 8th Grade, her family took a cross-country trip in their converted school bus! Next year, Annie will be taking a gap year before attending college. She'll be working for WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). As part of WWOOF, she'll spend time working in Hawaii, Japan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka! Annie's Dad was the Trails Manager at MH&T for 12 years, so she's always had a special place in her heart for the organization and is excited to spend the summer working for MH&T.
