2-Hut Guided Ski Adventure (Grand Falls & Flagstaff)

Trip Description 

3-Day/2-Night @ 2 Huts (Grand Falls Hut > Flagstaff Hut)
Gear up for a three-day, two-night hut-to-hut adventure. Let a Registered Maine Guide lead you along some of our most scenic backcountry trails on the way to Grand Falls Hut for the first night. Experience the stunning views along the Dead River and Flagstaff Lake on the way to Flagstaff Hut, where you’ll spend your second night. Delicious meals, hot showers, crackling woodstoves and friendly people await you at each hut.

Itinerary Outline

Day 1:
10:00 AM Meet your guide at the Long Falls Dam Road Trailhead. Put your backpack in the gear box so that it can be shuttled to the hut (Shuttle leaves at 12:00 PM. Click here for more information on gear shuttles.)
10:30 AM Follow your guide (via vehicle) to the Big Eddy Trailhead just a short distance up the road and begin your adventure skiing along the Upper Dead River towards Grand Falls Hut. This first day’s ski will be a nice easy warm-up along a flat, 8-mile stretch of trail. Overall elevation loss of 9 feet. (7.8 miles total)
2:00 - 4:00 PM Arrive at Grand Falls Hut. The day’s effort will be worth it when you are greeted by the friendly hut staff and can enjoy a hot shower and a warm beverage before a delicious dinner.
4:00 PM Gear shuttle arrives at the hut with your backpack
6:00 PM Dinner
Day 2:
7:30 AM Breakfast
8:30 AM Depart Grand Falls Hut. Today will be a great day to relax the muscles and enjoy a beautiful ski along the Upper Dead River. Ski alongside the stunning 40-foot Grand Falls soon after leaving the hut, then continue on a trail that winds through old growth forest, with very little elevation gain or loss. Just 1.7 miles after leaving the hut, you’ll cross the Chappell Bridge over the Dead River and then cruise along a flat 6-mile stretch hugging the river. Cross the Long Falls Dam Road at mile 7.8, being sure to check out the gorgeous views of the Bigelows during the last 3.6 miles of today’s ski. Overall elevation gain of 115 feet. (11.2 miles total)
1:00 - 3:00 PM Arrive at Flagstaff Hut and spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing in front of the woodstove or exploring the point and the views across the lake.
4:00 PM Gear shuttle arrives at the hut with your backpack
6:00 PM Dinner
Day 3:
7:30 AM Breakfast & gear shuttle departs with your backpack
10:00 AM Depart Flagstaff Hut and let your guide lead you back along the trails to the Big Eddy Trailhead. Elevation loss of 106 feet, with several small ascents and descents between the Hut and the Trailhead. (3.8 miles)
12:00 PM Gear shuttle arrives at the hut with your backpack
12:00 - 1:00 PM Arrive at the Big Eddy Trailhead. Don’t forget to stop at the Long Falls Dam Road Trailhead grab your pack from the gear box before you head home!
