3-Hut Guided Ski Tour

4-Day/3-Night @ 3 Huts (Flagstaff Hut > Poplar Hut > Stratton Brook Hut)

Experience three huts over four days of adventure with a Registered Maine Guide. Explore scenic backcountry trails while taking in views of Flagstaff Lake, Bigelow and Sugarloaf Mountains as you visit Flagstaff, Poplar and Stratton Brook Huts. As always, you can look forward to hearty home-cooked meals, hot showers, toasty bunkrooms and cozy spots in front of the fireplace.

Itinerary Outline

Day 1:
12:00 PM Meet your guide at the Long Falls Dam Road/Flagstaff Trailhead in North New Portland. Put your backpack in the gear box so that it can be shuttled to the hut (Shuttle leaves at 12:00 noon. Click here for more information on gear shuttles.)
12:30 - 2:00 PM Begin with a nice flat, easy ski along the Maine Hut Trail into Flagstaff Hut. Overall elevation loss of 38 feet, very flat terrain from the trailhead to the hut. (1.8 miles total)
4:00 PM Gear shuttle arrives at the hut with your backpack
6:00 PM Dinner
 
Day 2:
7:30 AM Breakfast & gear shuttle departs with your backpack
8:30 AM Depart Flagstaff Hut with your guide and start the day with a nice easy warm up. The first 3.9 miles of skiing along the edge of Flagstaff Lake are very flat. Cross the Long Falls Dam Road and continue uphill for 1.6 miles to the Halfway Yurt. Elevation gain of 386 feet, nearly all in the 1.6 miles from the Long Falls Dam Road to the Halfway Yurt. (5.5 miles)
11:00 - 12:00 PM Arrive at the Halfway Yurt and break for lunch and warm up before continuing your ski.
12:00 - 1:00 PM Leave the Yurt and descend for 1 mile, cross the Long Falls Dam Road again and enjoy some rolling hills as the trail winds through old Hemlock growth, crosses the East Flagstaff Road at mile 7.8 and then the Carriage Road at mile 8.0. Enjoy the final 3.6 miles of today’s ski, the last mile of which will have some challenging uphill. Elevation loss of 236 feet with a 450-foot descent immediately after leaving the Yurt and a 150-foot ascent just before arriving at Poplar. (6.1 miles)
2:00 - 4:00 PM Arrive at Poplar Hut and check in with the Hut Staff. Relax with a hot cup of coffee or tea or even a glass of wine or beer by the fire before dinner. Overall elevation gain of 150 feet from Flagstaff Hut to Poplar Hut. (11.6 miles total)
4:00 PM Gear shuttle arrives at the hut with your backpack
6:00 PM Dinner
 
Day 3:
7:30 AM Breakfast & gear shuttle departs with your backpack
8:30 AM Leave Poplar Hut with your guide and start the day’s ski with a fun downhill first thing. Merge right onto the Narrow Gauge Trail and enjoy a nice flat 2-mile section. Merge back onto the Maine Hut Trail and ski gradually uphill for another 3 miles, pausing to appreciate the outstanding views from Crommet’s Overlook along the way. Finally, merge onto Newton’s Revenge Trail where, true to it’s name, the last mile to the hut will be a challenging uphill climb. Overall elevation gain of 566 feet, almost entirely in the last mile of trail before Stratton Brook Hut. (7.6 miles total)
12:00 - 1:00 PM Arrive at Stratton Brook Hut. Pat yourself on the back for a ski well done with a hot cup of coffee or tea or even a glass of wine or beer by the fire. Don’t forget to check out the amazing 360° views of Sugarloaf, Crocker and the Bigelows, they are well worth the trip!
4:00 PM Gear shuttle arrives at the hut with your backpack
6:00 PM Dinner
 
Day 4:
7:30 AM Breakfast & gear shuttle departs with your backpack
10:00 AM Depart Stratton Brook Hut and let your guide lead you back along the trails to the Airport Trailhead. Overall elevation loss of 997 feet, much of which is in the first mile of trail from Stratton Brook. (4.8 or 6.7 miles total, depending on route taken)
12:00 PM Gear shuttle arrives at the trailhead with your backpack
12:00 - 1:30 PM Arrive at the Airport Trailhead. Don’t forget to grab your pack from the gear box before you head home!
