Trip Idea: Hut-to-Hut Shoreline Trek

Trip Description

SAMPLE ITINERARY:

Day 1:
The first day is all about taking it easy. You'll park at the Long Falls Dam Road Trailhead any time before 3PM, and hike the flat Shoreline Trail for just over 2 miles to Flagstaff Hut. If time and conditions allow, you can swim, kayak, canoe or paddleboard on Flagstaff Lake. Your bunk room will be ready as early as 11AM, but you’re welcome to come any time before 5PM. The talented hut crew will prepare a locally-sourced spread in the main dining room at 6. After dinner, relax in front of the fire pit with a classic Maine microbrew before settling in for the night. Approximate mileage: 2.2

Day 2:
You'll wake up to the call of loons around 7AM, with a hot and hearty breakfast prepared by the hut crew at 7:30. After breakfast, the hut crew will lay out a selection of healthy trail lunch options- pack your lunch and strike out toward the shoreline of the Dead River. The 11.5 mile hike takes you over beautiful rolling terrain along the water to Grand Falls. You'll arrive at Grand Falls Hut with plenty of time to settle in before dinner is served at 6PM. Approximate mileage: 11.5

Day 3:
After breakfast at 7:30, be sure to take one more walk down to the waterfall before hiking back along the river to Flagstaff Hut, stopping for lunch along the way. You'll arrive back at Flagstaff Hut in the early afternoon. You're welcome to relax by the lake and enjoy the area for as long as you’d like before making your way back to the nearby trailhead.

With the exception of hut meal times, all other times given are approximate. Your schedule will ultimately depend on the conditions of the day and your comfort level. This trip is best for people who are able to comfortably carry their own gear while hiking on uneven terrain and through variable weather for up to 12-14 miles for 2 days.

Included: 2 nights of lodging at two different huts in shared bunkrooms (private rooms available at an extra charge) and all meals (2 dinners, 2 breakfasts, 2 trail lunches).
