Explore some of New England’s best single track terrain on this two night advanced/expert mountain bike trip. Stay trailside at Stratton Brook Hut, and challenge yourself with an exhilarating 50K loop, designed as a training course for the Carrabassett Backcountry Cycle Challenge.
This trip is for advanced/expert riders only who can safely spend a full day riding technical terrain, often out of cell phone range. The suggested training loop includes significant elevation gain over many miles, including plenty of black diamond single track. While this is a great way to train for an endurance race, it’s open to anyone ready to put on some serious miles.
Day 1: Make your way to Stratton Brook Hut anytime between 11am and 5PM. There are a few ways to get there, but we recommend getting a gear shuttle and leaving from the Airport Trailhead. When you get to the hut, you’ll have access to a hot shower, cold beer, and a bike tuning station. If you’ve opted for a gear shuttle, it will get to the hut by 4PM. Dinner is served at 6, but you’ll want to give yourself an hour or so to get checked in and settled in your bunk room.
Day 2: After breakfast is served at 7:30, you’ll pack your trail lunch and be ready to ride by 9. Most advanced riders will take 5-6 hours to ride the 50K loop, including stopping for breaks. This brings you back to the hut around 2 or 3, so you’ll have a few hours to rest and stretch before dinner is served at 6.
Day 3: If you’re using a gear shuttle, it will need to be ready to be picked up from the hut by 7:30. After breakfast, you’re welcome to stay at the hut for as long as you’d like, as long as your bunk room is cleared out by 11. Make your way back down to the trailhead, stopping for your final trail lunch along the way.
A map of the suggested 50K loop will be provided in advance of your trip. This trip is best for advanced mountain bikers who are comfortable riding expert single track terrain for hours.
