Grand Falls is the most remote and secluded hut, being the northernmost point in the entire system. With spectacular views, proximity to Grand Falls waterfall, and access by boat, this hut is a favorite for many.
Grand Falls Hut and the surrounding trails are temporarily closed. Bridge and trail repair between West Forks and Big Eddy are being planned, but will be a multi-year project.

The Riverside Retreat
Grand Falls is our most remote hut, located almost 12 miles northeast of Flagstaff Lake. A combination of dead outdated batteries and washed out bridges have kept the Hut closed for the last couple years. In addition to the batteries needing replacement, record flooding has not been kind to our 18+ bridges that extend along the Dead River on the way to the Hut.
Fundraising to purchase a full set of new lithium ion batteries is ongoing. Once the batteries are replaced, we will be able to fire up the solar energy system, run well water and the composting toilet system. Trail planning is underway thanks to a recent Community Outdoor Recreation Assistance Grant from Maine’s Department of Economic and Community Development. The trail plan will spotlight the best alternatives for repairing the bridges and making them resilient to future weather events and improving the overall trail experience. We will use this plan in 2025 and 2026 to expand our partnerships and raise funding to restore this extraordinary trail corridor connecting the communities of West Forks and Carrabassett Valley.
Winter travel makes Grand Falls Hut a true backcountry experience. Best accessed by skiers and fat bikers, travelers will enjoy the breathtaking Northern Maine views. To Access Grand Falls Hut area during the summer, please use Lower Enchanted Trailhead.

Staying at Grand Falls Hut
Grand Falls Hut is located on the Dead River, just under eight miles from the Big Eddy Trailhead. Guests can plan a one of kind fishing trip or create a base camp for a paddle or white water trip down the Dead River.
When you visit Grand Falls Hut, be prepared for limited access to power outlets and cellphone service. The hut has hot water, heat, indoor plumbing, a full commercial kitchen, and electricity, but we put a heavy focus on conservation of these resources. Bunkrooms are kept at temperatures around 50°F during winter and we ask that lights be turned off whenever you leave a room.
All rooms at the Huts are booked as private accommodations, with 8 bunkroom available. We do not book shared rooms with other guests.
Please bring a pair of shoes or heavy socks to wear inside when you take off your trail shoes and boots. Removing outside shoes helps us keep the hut clean and ready all our guests.
Special Thanks to Our Donors
Maine Huts & Trails would like to offer special thanks to Robert and Gayle Greenhill for making this hut possible.
