Volunteer Weekend at the Huts

Volunteer Weekend at the Huts

November 21, 2024

There was a full house at Stratton Brook and Poplar Stream Huts early November for a volunteer weekend. Volunteer groups are essential for winter hut preparation. Each hut gets between 12 and 14 cords of wood which must be neatly stacked. Our huts are fully heated by firewood during the winter months, and our hut crews always appreciate arrival at a tidy house.

Stratton Brook Hut Wood Project

John Carter and the ambitious Falmouth High School Outing Club cleaned up Stratton Hut’s remaining 10 cords of wood in record time. The crew is a regular fixture at our huts, with spring cleanup and fall prep dates already under their belts. We are still in awe it only took a little over three hours (!) to stack all that wood. These kids are already seasoned wood stacking veterans!

Before and After:

Poplar Hut Winter Prep

Poplar Stream Hut may have been closed for summer, but the Hut still needs wood in preparation for winter. Campfire Institute, lead by friend of MH&T Rae-a, worked with Sam Shirley to side-by-side the cords of firewood up from the Access Road bridge. The bridge needs replacement for vehicle use, so smaller vehicles are the only option for us. Winter guests, no need to worry. The wood made it up safe and sound! Thank you Campfire, for taking on this complicated endeavor!

Thank you.

We are eternally grateful for the passion and hard work of our volunteers. Groups offering to get the huts ready for upcoming seasons are a fun teamworking exercise. Schools, community groups, and outdoor clubs seeking a bit of adventure and hands-on work are great for spring tidying of the huts and fall winter preparation. Interested in joining our volunteer community? Groups may email Sam Shirley and individuals can reach out to Sami Hotchkiss for details!
