Grand Falls stay
My family and I ( four of us) spent two nights at the Grand Falls Hut in mid Feb. We skied in from Big Eddy ( about 8 miles) which was a beautiful trip. We had light snow falling and the rushing Dead River to accompany us most of the way. The trail is a pretty flat most of the way which made it accessible for us inexperienced cross country skiers. We pulled a sled ( mistake) with our sleeping bags and it took us about 4 hrs, with plenty of stops for water and snacks. Had we realized the sleeping accommodations were as warm as they are, we could have brought very lightweight bedding and been comfortable-and not had to bring the sled:) We arrived just at dusk and just in time for a wonderful meal, piping hot sheppard’s pie with a fresh tossed kale salad and bread ( including gluten-free offerings for my wife). Really fantastic meal and very welcomed after the long ski. The lodge was spacious, warm and had very comfortable furniture to relax with beautiful high windows looking over the adjacent range. We chose to stay at the same hut and thus were able to relax a bit the second day, skiing to Grand Falls ( spectacular horseshoe falls about 1.5 miles from the Hut) and along the trail to West Forks ( much steeper and more challenging than the trail in from the Big Eddy, but well groomed and fun to ski down the big hills without the burden of heavy packs and a sled racing past you!). We had hearty breakfasts both days ( pancakes, eggs, bacon, etc and gluten-free offerings as well) packed lunches each day and another wonderful hot meal the second night. We also really enjoyed the family style seating, which gave us a chance to meeting many very interesting fellow "hutters." I must mention the staff at the Hut: Kelly and Zack and their crew were awesome hosts, extremely hospitable, helpful and really good cooks! We really enjoyed our stay, it was great for all of us to be off our phones/ gadgets for 3 days and we didn’t miss it! Terrific opportunity to bond and challenge the elements a bit. Highly recommended.
