Meet Our Winter Hut Crew

Meet Our Winter Hut Crew

January 9, 2026

Let’s meet some of our winter hut crew! This year’s team comes from all over the country—and even beyond—bringing together a wonderfully diverse mix of backgrounds, experiences, and personalities. We’re thrilled to welcome such a fun, enthusiastic bunch who share a love for the huts and the winter season. Be sure to say hi and get to know them the next time you visit a hut, they’re a big part of what makes the experience so special.

Nate grew up on a rural farm in Massachusetts and spent most of his adult life in New Hampshire. After moving to Bethel, Maine, in 2022, he spent much of his free time exploring Maine’s wilderness, developing a growing sense of peace in our expansive state. He brings a background in food service, hospitality, carpentry, and even mycology, among many other skills.

During warmer seasons, he works as a Park Ranger in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. He found his way to Maine Huts & Trails after a paddler in the AWW suggested joining the hut crew for the winter season.

On his days off days, he can be found skiing and snowshoeing the MH&T trails or studying wild plants and fungi during the summer months. Stop by our Stratton Hut to say hello and get to know more about Nate.

Ben is originally from Huntsville Alabama. He always has had a love for the outdoors and has hiked all over the US and in different countries. This is his first time in Maine and is looking forward to experiencing a Maine winter with lots of snow. When not here, he spends most of his time in Perú with wife and daughter in the jungle between the Andes mountains and the Amazon rainforest. In the summer he works in Alaska at both a fish cannery on the Pacific coast and at a cabins and cafe style resort outside of Denali National Park.

Sofia is the hut crew leader at Flagstaff, and likes the sun, adrenaline rushes and tips.

Gaby is from Texas and was curious about seasonal work and MHT gave her the opportunity to see what it’s about. On her off days you’ll find her enjoying the views from inside the cabin.

Sophie is from Littleton, MA and spends most of her year living and working in the Adirondacks building hiking trails. She dabbles in playing various stringed instruments and loves to play the card games pitch and euchre, come visit Stratton to play a hand after dinner!

Heloise is from Portland and graduated from Casco Bay High School this past summer. She enjoys skiing, cycling, and exploring the White Mountains. She grew up coming to the huts and am excited to be part of the team this winter.

Julia likes crafting, hiking, scenic swims and gentle mosh pits. If you see her, give her tips on XC skiing!

Ava likes cooking, yoga and nature walks. She also wants to know about your favorite “no skips” album.

Elliot is from New York and is a first-time crew member with Maine Huts & Trails. He’s been working on and around the Appalachian Trail since 2023 and has been in Maine since last spring. When he’s not at the hut, you can find him plotting long-distance hikes, making jewelry, and listening to Van Halen.
