Falmouth High School Outing Club Tackles Firewood at Poplar Stream Hut

October 30, 2026

We are always excited to welcome back the Falmouth High School Outing Club for their biannual volunteer overnight! They are a regular fixture at Maine Huts & Trails, and we are always happy to bring the seasoned crew back in to help out at the huts.

Led by John Carter, the group took on a big job at Poplar Stream Hut: stacking firewood. To keep things moving, the students split into teams, each working at a different station.

  • Team one loaded wood down into the hut basement, where it will be ready for immediate use in the Tarm wood boiler.
  • Team two stacked wood on the freestanding outside pallets.
  • Team three filled the covered woodshed.
  • Team four set up firewood on pallets between the bunkhouses.

With so many hands pitching in, the crew made fast work of multiple cords of wood!

After a job well done, the group celebrated with an overnight stay at the hut. Dinner was a taco bar, followed by s’mores around the outdoor fire pit.

We love offering volunteer groups a free overnight stay in exchange for their work at our huts. Many of the Outing Club members have volunteered with us before, and we are thrilled to give them a great experience at Maine Huts & Trails.

Thank you, Falmouth High School Outing Club!
