Wabanaki Youth in Science & Skowhegan Outdoors Visit the Huts

July 2, 2025

Last week, we welcomed two great groups to the huts for the first time!

Wabanaki Youth in Science operated their week-long Summer Earth Camp at Flagstaff Lake Hut. Hot weather during the first part of the week was perfect for swimming and canoeing on Flagstaff Lake. Campers also set up an archery range near the hut, went fishing, and participate in traditional activities while connecting with the beautiful landscape. On Wednesday, the group took a trip up to Grand Falls for some swimming and fishing at the impressive waterfall on the Dead River.

Skowhegan Outdoors wrapped up their first week of mountain bike camp with an overnight ride up to Stratton Brook Hut. After ascending to the hut via Newton’s Revenge, the more ambitious of the group descended the back side of Oak Knoll on Bear and Esker Trails to fish and swim in Stratton Brook Pond, before climbing back to the hut. the best thing about staying overnight at Stratton Brook Hut is that the riding is all downhill in the morning! The group wrapped up their trip with a descent down Oak Knoll Trail back to the trailhead. They will be returning later this month for their second session of mountain bike camp!
