What to Expect on a Winter Hut Trip

What to Expect on a Winter Hut Trip

October 22, 2025

Whether you are thinking about booking a winter hut trip, or have already secured your spot, this guide will give you information about an overnight hut stay. Our free trails are maintained and funded by revenue from our winter overnights, so thank you for helping keep the backcountry accessible.

To the Hut!

Before you leave the house, check trail conditions and know driving directions to your trailhead and what trails to take. If you have booked the gear shuttle, be sure to reach the drop-off point before 11am. Not sure what to pack? See our sample packing list for trip essentials.

Arrival

You’ve made it to the hut! Upon arrival, check in at the front window with our hut staff. They will give you the layout of the hut, amenities, and direct you to your private bunkroom.

Relax

Now is the time to unpack and relax. Collect your gear and get settled in your bunkroom, then join other trekkers in the cozy hut for some free coffee, tea, and relaxation. Browse our library, collection of games, or swap trail stories with others. Intrepid guests can explore the trails around the huts if they want more adventure.

Dinner and Evening

Enjoy the fruits of your labor with a warm meal! Full service guests will have dinner cooked for them and served family-style, while self service guests can craft their own backcountry feast in our commercial kitchen. Our huts also offer a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages for purchase during all stays. We pride ourselves on our collection of Maine’s best beers! After dinner, enjoy a complimentary energy system tour by our hut staff and kick back and unwind.

Morning and Departure

Good morning! Inside our lodge, guests will be greeted with hot coffee and tea for your day. Full service guests will be served a hearty breakfast and also receive a bagged trail lunch. Whether you are off to the next hut or back to the trailhead, be sure to check the trail map and know your route. Hut staff are always there to answer any questions. Don’t forget to pack all your gear from the bunkrooms and close any open tabs with hut staff. If you booked the gear shuttle, check the timing for gear arrival and bring a day pack with essentials.

Don’t miss out on an amazing adventure! Book now and join us this winter. Because of your winter visits, our trails stay open and free for everyone.
