Winter Volunteer Caretaker Training

Nov
7th

We’re looking for volunteer caretakers to help during the winter season, providing essential support on self-service days at the huts, Monday through Wednesday. By stepping in, you’ll give our hut staff a well-earned rest while making sure every guest who arrives is greeted with warmth and a cozy place to land. No experience is needed, because we’re offering a free training session on November 7th at Flagstaff Lake Hut to get you ready. If you love the outdoors and want to give back to a community that shares that passion, we’d love to have you on our team this winter.

When: Saturday, November 7th 11am – 2pm

Where: Flagstaff Lake Hut

Details: Hike or bike into Flagstaff Lake Hut from the Flagstaff Trailhead on the Maine Hut Trail for a 3-hour caretaker training session. Light lunch, coffee, and tea will be provided.

Caretaking FAQ:

What do winter caretakers do?

Caretakers support the hut and our hut staff. Potential tasks could include wood stacking, snow removal, kitchen, bathroom, bunkroom, and great room cleaning, tidying up the basement, pantry and beverage organization and inventory, and library and game room organizing, among others.

Does it cost anything to caretake?

While we don’t charge for volunteer caretakers, we require that volunteer work be done in exchange for lodging.

What do I need to bring to caretaking days?

Caretakers should pack based on our sample packing list, plus all food items for their stay. Our huts have coffee, tea, oils, and spices for cooking.

Do I need to bring in my own gear?

During self-service trips, caretakers must transport their own gear and food to the huts, as we do not offer gear shuttling services.

Can I bring a friend or my family?

With permission of the volunteer coordinator, caretakers may bring along one guest, with the expectation that they will be training and volunteering as well.
