Fall 2026 Volunteer Trail Work Opportunities

Fall 2026 Volunteer Trail Work Opportunities

August 3, 2026

There’s nothing quite like knowing you helped maintain the trail beneath your feet. This late summer and fall, Maine Huts & Trails is inviting volunteers to do exactly that, with three trail work days that keep our huts and trails in great shape for everyone who visits.

Why Volunteer?

Behind every mile of well-maintained trail and every warm, welcoming hut is a small army of volunteers. MH&T simply couldn’t do what we do without them. Whether you’re a longtime supporter or brand new to the organization, we’re always looking for motivated people, families, and groups who want to roll up their sleeves and get more involved. Kids are welcome too, just bring a guardian along if anyone in your group is under 18.

Here’s what’s on the calendar:

Saturday, August 29 | 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Flagstaff Lake Hut — Trail Clearing & Weed Whacking

Kick things off with a morning of trail maintenance on the sections north of Flagstaff Lake Hut. We’ll be clearing brush and weed whacking to keep the paths in top shape heading into fall.

Prepping for the Make-A-Wish Trailblaze Challenge

Ready for a bigger commitment? Join us for a two-day, one-night volunteer trip based out of Flagstaff Lake Hut. This crew will be clearing surrounding trails ahead of the Make-A-Wish Trailblaze Challenge, the beloved annual fundraising trek held on MH&T’s trail network. We look forward to hosting the Trailblaze participants every year, and we’re proud to help get the trails ready for such a meaningful cause.

Poplar Stream Hut — Winter Wood Stacking

Our final fall volunteer day is all about getting Poplar Stream Hut ready for the cold months ahead by stacking wood. Depending on time and interest, we may also tackle some light trail work on Larry’s and Warren’s backcountry trails.

What to Bring

Come dressed to work outdoors: trail-friendly clothing, closed-toed shoes, gloves, and bug spray are all recommended. Have your own tools? Bring them along — but don’t worry if you don’t, MH&T will have basic tools, eye protection, and gloves on hand, plus light snacks throughout the day.

A few notes on food:
  • Day volunteers (August 29 and October 1) should pack their own lunch.
  • Overnight volunteers (September 8–9) should bring their own food provisions and will have access to the hut kitchen to prepare meals.

Ready to Join Us?

Whether you can make it for one morning or a whole weekend, every hour of volunteer trail work makes a real difference. Head to mainehuts.org/volunteer or email [email protected] to sign up or learn more. We’d love to see you out on the trail.
