Volunteer Trail Clearing at Flagstaff Lake Hut
This past September 8th and 9th, Maine Huts & Trails welcomed volunteers to Flagstaff Lake Hut for our second big volunteer overnight of the year.
Getting the Trails Ready
Volunteers spent the weekend clearing the Maine Hut Trail, Birch Trail and Shore Trail surrounding the hut, and the weather couldn’t have cooperated more. Under clear skies and comfortable temperatures, the group cleared, lopped, and weed whacked a full 6 miles of trail.
This work wasn’t just routine maintenance. It was preparation for the upcoming Make-A-Wish Trailblaze Challenge, a one-day event where participants trek more than 25 miles to raise funds for an incredible cause. Maine Huts & Trails is proud to host these trails for the Trailblaze Challenge for the 8th year in a row, and thanks to this weekend’s efforts, the trails will be in great shape for participants to take on the challenge.
More Than Just Work
Of course, a volunteer weekend at the hut is about more than swinging loppers. The energy among volunteers was fantastic all weekend long. When the work was done, folks kicked back with some paddling on the lake, cooked meals together, gathered around a fire, and swapped stories late into the evening. Add in the fact that the leaves were just beginning to turn made for a truly special couple of days at Flagstaff Lake Hut.
