Volunteering for Maine Huts & Trails is its own reward—the camaraderie with other volunteers and staff, the feeling of accomplishment and of making a difference, any excuse to be in such beautiful outdoor places. There are also tangible benefits attached to specific opportunities. Volunteering supports MH&T’s mission to create and operate a world-class system of back-country trails and eco-lodges for people-powered recreation to enhance the economy, communities, and environment of Maine’s Western Mountain region for the benefit or current and future generations.

Hut Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Lunch Staff

Hike into Poplar, Stratton Brook or Flagstaff Hut by 10, work till 2 or so and have lunch on us! You’ll be helping hut staff create the welcoming and quality experience for which we’re becoming so well known! Staff will lay out the help they need, from greeting guests and promoting membership to keeping tables neat and clean, tending the fireplace, straightening out games and books—maybe even moving some wood in the basement—who knows!

Volunteer Hut Staff-Overnight

Arrive at any of the four huts by 4, leave the next day by 10-12 to work 6-8 hours for a $25 overnight! Here again, you’ll be helping hut staff create our MH experience! Staff will orient you to the help they need, you’ll have dinner and breakfast with staff and guests, work hard and leave tired and happy! Dishwashing and food prep are very likely to be part of this gig!

Volunteer Hut Caretakers

Volunteer hut caretakers turn self-service season into some of our best guest experiences! Caretakers live at the huts for a period of two to twelve weeks, with room and board for one and lots of support. Along with the work associated with caretaking any valuable property, caretakers live rent-free and off-the-grid, with a recreational playground right outside the door.
